Just One More! Maia Not Retired Yet

Source: MMA Mania
Date: 2022-05-25

Photo by Mike Roach/Zuffa LLCDemian Maia has been flirting with retirement for a few years now but targets one final dance. A former two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title challenger in two different divisions (Middleweight and Welterweight), Maia has etched his name into the mixed martial arts (MMA) history books as arguably the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner of all time. Now 44-years-old, Maia realizes it’s just about time to call it a career officially. “I’m not officially retired,” Maia told Morning Kombat. “I wanna do one more fight in the UFC but I don’t want to fight at any other event because UFC is my house, it’s been my house for the last 15 years. So if I get another chance, I will do one more fight there but I’m pretty much focused more on my other parts of my career. I still train in MMA, I still do boxing and Thai-boxing with takedowns, this kind of thing, so that I can keep sharp if I need to do one more fight but at the sam

The Ultimate Fighter 30 results: Laura Gallardo vs. Kathryn Paprocki

Source: MMA Fighting
Date: 2022-05-25

Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLCLaura Gallardo made the most of a last-second opportunity and is now one step closer to a UFC contract. The fourth episode of The Ultimate Fighter 30 saw Team Julianna Peña’s Laura Gallardo (4-1) become the most unlikely of semifinalists in the season’s flyweight tournament as she defeated Team Amanda Nunes’ Kathryn Paprocki (3-2)* by majority decision after being brought in as an alternate fighter for Chantel Coates. Gallardo wasn’t the only part of the bout switched, as Paprocki stepped in for teammate Brogan Walker. It was Coates’ exit from the competition that caused the chain of changes as the recent Combate Global and Invicta FC fighter found herself unable to make weight. She had previously discussed how her health was affected by a bout with COVID-19 and a miscarriage, and when she told Peña and her coaches that she was 28.5 pounds over the flyweight limit ahead of her fight, they were immediately concerned. It was eventually decided t

USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, May 24: Ketlen Vieira enters top 5 at women's bantamweight

Source: MMA Junkie
Date: 2022-05-25

The women’s bantamweight division was shaken up after a controversial split decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night 206. Ketlen Vieira squeaked by Holly Holm after five rounds of back-and-forth action, claiming a split decision victory over the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion. The fight was incredibly close, with both women having their moments throughout the fight. However, when it was all said and done and the scores were read, the result did not sit well with many, including Holm, who thought her work in the clinch sealed the win. Vieira’s strikes appeared more impactful when in space, earning her the nod on two of the three judges’ scorecards. After the win, she moves up to claim the No. 4 spot in this week’s rankings update while Holm falls behind her at No. 5. The co-main event saw a Fight of the Night battle between Michel Pereira and Santiago Ponzinibbio. This one was another intense fight that was so close the judges had trouble agreeing on who won af

Video: Was Holly Holm robbed or did Ketlen Vieira simply win a close fight?

Source: MMA Junkie
Date: 2022-05-25

The term “robbery” is thrown around a lot when it comes to controversial judging outcomes in MMA. At UFC Fight Night 206, former bantamweight champion Holly Holm came up short by one judge’s scorecard, losing a split decision to Ketlen Vieira after 25 minutes of action. Holm’s immediate reaction to the decision was one of disgust and frustration, feeling she did more than enough to win the fight. Naturally, the conversation on MMA judging began raging again as it often does when many do not agree with the judging outcome, especially when a fan-favorite fighter loses a close split. But in this case, was Holm “robbed” of a win or did Vieira simply win a close fight that could have gone either way? Our panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Mike Bohn and Danny Segura discuss this topic along with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia. “Spinning Back Clique” is released each Tuesday on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch the full episode in the video below. Gallery UF

Having fought his way to contention with seven consecutive wins in three years, Dariush finds himself near the top of the lightweight division and wants to further his ascension by fighting — and defeating — his fellow contenders. Among those contenders is Oliveira, who went from UFC lightweight champion to No. 1 contender after being stripped for missing weight ahead of his defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 earlier this month. There is no word yet on who Oliveira expects to fight in a No. 1 contender, but he has expressed interest in McGregor. ‘Do Bronx’ previously explained during a post-fight press conference that it would be ‘a great payday’ and ‘good’ fo

I’m sick and I’m tired of just f—king... this s—t. Source: MMA Junkie

Tony Ferguson isn’t looking to take a step back in competition after four consecutive losses. Ferguson (25-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC), who was on the receiving end of a Knockout of the Year candidate against Michael Chandler at UFC 274 earlier this month, is in a difficult stretch of his career with a skid that was capped off with him taking a punt to the face and being put out cold for the first time. Although “El Cucuy” plans some major adjustments in the aftermath of his most recent defeat, including finding a new team and training environment, he’s not looking to take any easy fights to get back on the winning track. In fact, Ferguson, who is No. 9 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie lightweight rankings, said his ideal comeback opponent would be No. 2 Dustin Poirier. “I would love to be able to fight Dustin Poirier,” Ferguson told MMA Junkie. “Obviously he likes to go stand-up. A stand-up battle wouldn’t be bad.” Related Henry Cejudo: Conor McGregor should want 'w

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight contender has been placed on administrative leave from his duties as Fairmont Private Schools high school wrestling coach, reports TMZ Sports. According to the report, Munoz allowed two students to settle their difference by boxing on the Anaheim, Calif. playground. Munoz has been working in the role since Sept. 2020. Munoz says he was unaware of any issues between the students, who came up and asked him if they could acquire some boxing gloves to duke it out. Munoz, 44, perceived the debacle to be a friendly one. The parents of each boy were none too pleased with the situation and took things to the school administration. Thus resulting in the leave being instated. “[He] will not be returning to campus,” a spokesperson said. Munoz’s contra

Guilherme Cruz, MMA FightingRenan Barao is once again scheduled to make his MMA return. The former UFC bantamweight champion is set to face William Gomis in a featherweight bout at ARES FC 7 on June 25 in Paris. The promotion announced the matchup Tuesday via Instagram. If it happens, the fight will be Barao’s first since his release from the UFC in 2019. Barao (34-9, 1 NC) has seemingly been snakebitten in recent years with his attempts to mount an MMA comeback. The 35-year-old Brazilian has seen three previous bookings fall through since his exit from the UFC, including a proposed bout this past January against Horacio Gutierrez at Eagle FC 44 that ultimately wound up getting cancelled. At one time, Barao was considered to be among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. He rode an impressive 33-fight unbeaten streak all the way to capturing and defending the UFC bantamweight title before a 2014 upset loss to T.J. Dillashaw sent him into a career tailspin.
