Gaslighting fans and fighters key part of UFC negotiation strategy

Dana White is trying to gaslight Nate Diaz, Kayla Harrison and UFC fans | Photo by Michael Owens/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLCThe UFC President tries to create false narratives around Nate Diaz, Kayla Harrison, and other people they want to negotiate with. UFC president Dana White worked in two of the UFC’s favorite negotiating tactics into a single interview. Neither strategy was new, but to hear and see White use them back-to-back in discussing Nate Diaz and Kayla Harrison was a little jarring in its brazenness. Nate Diaz, who White once referred to as “not a needle mover” to downplay Diaz’s popularity and degrade the fighter’s negotiating power, has one fight left on his UFC contract. It appears Diaz, who is one of the company’s biggest draws, plans to fight out his deal and see what the free market brings to the table. The UFC usually tries to dissuade fighters from taking that route. The promotion likes to re-sign fighters when they have one or more fights on their deals. Wh

Kattar Vs Chikadze Main Event Set For Jan. 15

Source: MMA Mania
Date: 2021-10-28

Photo by Mike Lawrie/Getty ImagesUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently booked featherweight boxer Calvin Kattar against 145-pound “Ninja” Giga Chikadze for the upcoming ESPN+ “Fight Night” card on Sat., Jan. 15, 2022, though a city and venue have yet to be determined. That’s according to MMA Junkie. Kattar (22-5) has not seen action since his near-death experience against former champion Max Holloway in the UFC on ABC event back in January. “The Boston Finisher” is 6-3 under the UFC banner with four knockouts. Chikadze (14-2) is currently ranked three sports below Kattar at No. 8 and is mad as hell about it. “Ninja” has put together an impressive nine-fight winning streak, including last August’s destruction of Edson Barboza. Also scheduled for the Jan. 15 fight card is the bantamweight battle between Saidyokub Kakhramonov and Brian Kelleher. Elsewhere in the lineup, Kay Hansen looks to make random guys rich opposite Jasmine Jasudavicius, while Ramiz Brahim

Claressa Shields 'not discouraged at all' after first MMA loss; fires back at Jake Paul

Source: MMA Junkie
Date: 2021-10-28

Claressa Shields is maintaining a positive attitude in the wake of her first combat sports loss at 2021 PFL Championship. Shields (1-1), a two-time Olympic gold medalist and undefeated boxing champion, fell short in her sophomore MMA effort Wednesday when she lost a split decision to Abigail Montes (3-0). It was a competitive, back-and-forth fight, but ultimately an inability to get up from her back in Round 3 cost Shields the fight. After putting together a flawless boxing run and winning her MMA debut earlier this year, Shields experienced defeat for the first time as a professional fighter – in any sport. There were immediate questions about how she would handle a setback, but the early signs show her intent to bounce back stronger. Shields took to social media Thursday and shared her perspective on the loss (via Twitter): https://twitter.com/Claressashields/status/1453726265819598860 I loss a split decision, I didn’t get my ass whooped I also improved. Harrison Vs Nunes (Or Cyborg) Should Be Next

Source: MMA Mania
Date: 2021-10-28

Cooper NeillKayla Harrison earned her second straight $1 million championship check from PFL last night (Weds., Oct. 27, 2021) by submitting Taylor Guardado in the second round of the PFL 10 main event in Hollywood, Fla., (highlights here). Obviously, the talk after the fight wasn’t so much about her win — which most expected to happen — but more about what her fighting future holds. The undefeated Harrison (12-0) broke down her options shortly after her big victory. “I don’t know. I have a lot to think about. I have a family now. Obviously I still want to be the best in the world. I want to continue to challenge myself and I feel like I can do that no matter where I go,” she said during the post-fight press conference. Prior to last night’s fight, much was made about Dana White’s comments suggesting that Harrison should stay put in PFL and keep picking off the talent she’s beating now a little bit longer and collecting paychecks before she makes a move to UFC. TUF 23 champion Andrew Sanchez released from the UFC

Source: MMA Fighting
Date: 2021-10-28

Ultimate Fighter season 23 champion Andrew Sanchez has been released from the UFC. Multiple sources confirmed the release when speaking to MMA Fighting on Wednesday. Sanchez first joined the UFC roster after a successful stint on the long-running reality show where he had several impressive performances including wins against Phil Hawes and Eric Spicely on his way to the finals in the light heavyweight tournament. He punched his ticket to a UFC contract following a lopsided win over Khalil Rountree Jr. before returning to the middleweight division, which is where he spent the majority of his career. Sanchez faced plenty of ups and downs during his run with the UFC, which included wins over fighters such as Trevor Smith, Marc-Andre Barriault and Wellington Turman while also suffering losses to Anthony Smith, Ryan Janes and Marvin Vettori. Most recently, Sanchez suffered back-to-back knockout losses including a third-round TKO to Bruno Silva at UFC Vegas 40. Overall, Sanchez fell by kno

Dan Hooker: UFC 267 is Islam Makhachev's party, and I'm here to spoil it

Source: MMA Junkie
Date: 2021-10-28

With the betting odds stacked against him, Dan Hooker is relishing the underdog role at UFC 267. Hooker (21-10 MMA, 11-6 UFC) meets Islam Makhachev (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) on Saturday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, where he’ll look to snap the winning streak of the highly touted contender. But Hooker is not irked by the hype surrounding Makhachev, nor competing in what has become a second home to the Russian. He’s just excited to beat the odds. “That train of thought never appealed to me, or I never understood discrediting an opponent’s achievements leading into a fight,” Hooker said Wednesday at UFC 267’s media day. “Because when you beat them, you’re just downplaying your own achievements. I have no intention to nitpick his past or nitpick any of his achievements and kind of downplay them. That’s not even how I approach it mentally. “I want to fight him because he is a specialist. I want to fight him because there is so much intrigue. I want to fight him because

UFC 267 Clash: Yan Vs. Sandhagen!

Source: MMA Mania
Date: 2021-10-28

Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLCUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight strikers Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen will collide this weekend (Sat., Oct. 30, 2021) at UFC 267 inside Etihad Arena on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Sometimes, everything works out in the end. Sure, it kind of sucks that UFC 267 will feature only a single undisputed title fight, whereas this gold belt will be named interim. At the same time, there’s a pretty significant portion of fight fans who see Yan as the real champion. I’m not defending that viewpoint necessarily — he blatantly cheated — but I can certainly see “No Mercy” looked very much like the best Bantamweight alive on the night he lost his title. Meanwhile, Cory Sandhagen very arguably deserved the nod in his title eliminator versus T.J. Dillashaw. Both men have faced setbacks recently, but those obstacles have not really made them less worthy of title fight. Let’s take a closer look at the keys to victory

Joanna Jedrzejczyk reveals biggest roadblock to her UFC return: ‘I deserve a bigger piece of the cake’

Source: MMA Fighting
Date: 2021-10-28

Esther Lin, MMA FightingJoanna Jedrzejczyk wants to fight again but she also wants to get paid. It’s been 19 months since the former strawweight champion last competed and just recently she was removed from the UFC rankings due to inactivity. Truth be told, Jedrzejczyk didn’t really care much about whether she was still in the rankings or not because that played no part in her sabbatical from the sport much less what it’s going to take to get her back in the octagon again. “It’s not like I do not care but I do not care,” Jedrzejczyk said about the rankings when appearing on The MMA Hour. “It doesn’t matter. It’s doesn’t bother me, that’s the thing. It doesn’t change anything. Because when I will be back, I will be back in the rankings and rankings don’t fight. This is what I did a post about and a few days later it happened. “They did [tell me]. [UFC matchmaker] Mick [Maynard] called us and said if I’m going to pull out of the fight, they’re going to ta

Two-time PFL winner Kayla Harrison unsure of next move, but mentally ready for whatever it is

Source: MMA Junkie
Date: 2021-10-28

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – After winning her second $1 million PFL title, Kayla Harrison will officially head into free agency unsure of what her next move is. Harrison (12-0) stayed perfect with a second-round armbar submission of Taylor Guardado (3-2) on Wednesday to win another women’s lightweight title. She was a heavy favorite in the fight, and the two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo backed it up with yet another dominant performance. But it was the last fight on her PFL deal, and now the speculation will be on whether she’ll return to the promotion or move on to another organization. A move to the UFC or Bellator, for example, would mean a move down to 145 pounds.
