In his return to the boxing ring, Anderson Silva (1-1, 1 KOs) surpassed expectations as he defeated former WBC middleweight titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (52–5–1 (1), 34 KOs) by split decision. Chavez Jr opened up the first round landing to the body of Silva. Midway through the round Chavez Jr landed a good left hook but Silva took it well. In the second, Silva was falling short on a lot of his punches as Chavez Jr was easily landing his jab. The third round was far more entertaining as the showmanship of Silva started to show. Chavez Jr had ‘The Spider’ backed up against the ropes but most of his punches missed or were blocked. On Saturday night in Mexico, the 46-year-old former UFC champion put on the performance of a lifetime as he dominated Chavez Jr. for the better part of all eight rounds in the co-main event for the Tribute to the Kings pay-per-view. When the fight was over, there was no doubt Silva had done more than enough to win, although the judges returned a puzzling split decision on the scorecards. GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Anderson Silva was successful in his return to professional boxing. The former UFC middleweight champion defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. via split decision in the main card of Tribute to the Kings. The scores read 75-77, 77-75, and 77-75 in favor of Silva. It was an eight-round professional boxing bout. Right off the gate, The 46-year-old Silva took the outside of the ring while Chavez Jr. stalked and pressured him. That was the tale of the first three rounds of the fight. Silva used his footwork to move around and pick his shots, while Chavez Jr. attacked often to the body and head.
